About Global Environmental Database (GED)

Global and multidisciplinary information is of utmost importance to facilitate the scientific understanding, future projection, and impact assessment of global environmental change. Since the impacts of global environmental issues are far-reaching, the responses are being discussed among various stakeholders who have different positions and ways of thinking. It is, therefore, essential that research results on environmental problems are disseminated not only to researchers, but also to the public in an easily understandable way.

The Center for Global Environmental Research (CGER) at the Earth System Division (ESD), National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), has created a Global Environmental Database (GED) to disseminate research data and results collected and compiled from natural and social sciences. The GED serves as a fundamental database related to global environmental problems with an emphasis on global warming and climate change.

Users can choose from the following menu: "Dataset List", "Real-Time Data", and "Analysis Tools".

Dataset List

Users can narrow down the datasets in the GED by keywords, categories, etc., and search from a map. If you already have a specific target, it is convenient to start from here.

The data are quality-controlled by the data providers and mostly provided with digital object identifiers (DOIs) to facilitate data utilization. Most of the data are published in formats that include metadata (e.g., NASA Ames format ) and can be visualized by a quick plot function without downloading the data files.

"Dataset List" is linked with the Global Environmental Research Data Management System (GERDaMS), which is managed and operated by the CGER. The datasets registered on the GERDaMS are normally released from here.

Real-Time Data

Continuously updated data in almost real-time are provided. Since this contains the most up-to-date data, this is very helpful to quickly grasp the present situation.

Please note that the real-time data are not fully quality controlled. For more accurate analyses, please use the quality-controlled data, published in the "Dataset List" with some delay.

"Links" lists the data and results of CGER research projects, especially conducted by CGER, in a wide range of fields grouped into different research themes. Research conducted in collaboration with other divisions at NIES is also included. Here, not only data but also various reports (e.g., CGER Report Series) are provided.
