The Monitoring Network for Ultraviolet Radiation was established at the Center for Global Environmental Research in 2000 with the cooperation of 16 organizations in Japan. It started active monitoring of ultraviolet radiation (UV-B: 280 to 315nm) in 2001. The purpose of the network is to monitor the amount of harmful ultraviolet radiation that reaches the earth's surface due to stratospheric ozone depletion. The resulting data is put to use in various ways, including evaluating the health risks that result from exposure to ultraviolet radiation.

As of December 2007, we have a network of 22 monitoring sites throughout Japan. On this website, we provide the following data: instantaneous values, hourly values, daily values, monthly values in graph form and monthly values as digital data.

Of the 21 monitoring sites, 15 of them provide real-time online UV indexes.
