In Hokkaido University, Nakagawa Experimental Forest, compartment 166 the natural forest. In 1971, a tree census with an area of 0.5ha (50m x 50m x 2plot)was established. Girth at breast height,Survival,Shortage of wood,Grade of wood quality 1 were measured at 5-year intervals5th is 11 years, 6th is 4 years.

北海道大学中川研究林166林班天然林動態調査のため,1971年に面積0.5ha(50m x 50m x 2plot)の調査区を設けた。5年間隔5回目が11年間隔、6回目が4年間隔で胸高直径,生枯,欠点,樹形級を測定した。

The target trees were 18cm or more in girth at breast height (1.3 m). Individual trees were identified using numbered metal plates.

Girth at breast height, Diameter at breast height / 胸高周囲長（きょうこう しゅういちょう）、胸高直径（きょうこうちょっけい）
In the survey at the time of setting, diameter at breast height (DBH: 1.3 m above ground) was measured with a caliper (2 cm unit). Since 2005, girth at breast height (GBH: 1.3 m above ground) has been measured with steel tape.

Grade of wood quality 1 / 樹形級（じゅけいきゅう）
Grade of wood quality were measured for broadleaved forests and mixed forests. Code indications. 1: overstory trees with good wood quality, 2: understory trees, which is expectable to become a good dominant tree, 3a: trees, which interrupt a better tree, 3b: trees with un-straight stem or a sign of death, decay or weakening.
