There is a Picea glehnii natural forest forest in compartment 109 of the Teshio Experimental Forest, Hokkaido University. The forest is managed with a selection system. The forest was selection cut in 1989. The dynamic state of the forest is observed in this plot. A study plot with area 0.5-ha was introduced in 1990, followed by repeated tree censuses (at 5-10 year intervals). From 1991, forest-dwelling rodent population investigation was started. From 1995, seed fall was investigated.

調査は北海道大学天塩研究林109林班で実施した。当該地では、1973（昭和48）年に倒木が発生し、倒木処理を行った。1989年に立木処分による伐採(択伐)がおこなわれた。アカエゾマツ林における択伐施業の影響を観察するため、1990年に、この長期観察林を設定し、調査を開始した。この観察林では、アカエゾ林内でも、小径木が多い箇所の動態を観察する。観察林の形状は 100m x 50m 、面積0.5haである。この観察内の樹木を、5-10年間隔で、本数、胸高周囲長などを計測している。この観察林は樹木だけでなく、1991年から野鼠調査を、1995年からは落下種子の調査をおこなった。
なお、長期観察林の調査は、以下の試験課題として実施した。

forest-dwelling rodent / 森林性の野鼠調査
Trapping was carried out for three consecutive days in every spring autumn at each plot (0.5 ha) using 50 Sherman-type live traps baited with oats and placed at 10-m intervals in a grid pattern. All rodents were identified by toe clipping upon first capture.
Species, location, identity, sex, body weight (once or more per trapping session), and reproductive status were recorded upon capture.

野鼠調査は1991（平成3）年に開始し、野鼠調査マニュアル(林田、中野 1991)に従って実施した。えん麦を入れたシャーマントラップ50個を10m間隔で仕掛け、翌日の午前中にトラップを見回った。トラップにより生け捕りした固体の種類・性別・体重等を記録し、ハサミで指を切ってマーキングした後、放した。調査期間は設置日を含めた4日間で、その間に1日1回の見回りを行い、計3回の調査を実施した。この調査を春と秋の年2回実施した。参考: FReD 北方森林圏データベース（http://fred.fsc.hokudai.ac.jp/default.htm）

In this plot, seed fall was investigated from 1995. A seed trap was used in this investigation. The seeds in a trap were collected once per month. The trap was used from spring to autumn. The seeds collected from the trap were recorded.
