Title:Kanumazawa Riparian Research Forest Data, North-East JAPAN, 1993-
Identifier:jalter-kanumazawa.3.2
Abstract:
The Kanumazawa Riparian Research Forest is located in a cool temperate deciduous broadleaved forest that is dominated by Cercidiphyllum japonicum Sieb. et Zucc., Aesculus x carnea Heyne, Pterocarya rhoifolia Sieb. et Zucc., and Fagus crenata Bl. This natural forest, which has developed along a torrent in a gorge, is believed to contain trees that are up to 1000 years old, and there are almost no traces of disturbance by humans. Snowfall in winter can exceed 2 meters. The forest floor is dominated by Camellia japonica Linn. var. decumbens Sugimoto.

Sampling, Processing and Quality Control Methods

Step by Step Procedures
Step 1:
Description:

Tree survey

Each tree at the research site having a gbh of at least 15 cm is surveyed. The following information from each surveyed stem is recorded: girth, species, location (5 m activity).

Sampling Area And Frequency:
Data have been collected in 1989, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2003 and 2007, the next survey is scheduled for 2011. Roughly 5000 stems are surveyed at one time.
Sampling Description:
The irregularly narrow shaped site (380 m in length, with a maximum width of 170 m) covers an area of 4.7 hectares along Kanumazawa Creek. Of this total, 2.5 hectares are in the gorge, 1 ha is in terraced uplands, and the remaining area is either steep colluvial slopes or eroded slopes between the gorge and terrace. The establishment of the study area was begun in 1988, when a 0.5 ha plot was set up near the upstream road. The next year, 1989, the plot was expanded to 1 ha to complete its initial form. After that, the plot was expanded to 2 ha in 1992, and expanded again in 1993 to 4.71 ha (including upland terraces), its present area.
