The study plot is located on a flat pumice deposits of Tarumai-san, an active volcano (50m asl) in compartment 139 of the Tomakomai Experimental Forest.The size of the study plot is 1200m2 (30×40m).The methods generally conformed with the literature established by the Forest Research Station, Field Science Center for Northern Biosphere, Hokkaido University. The details and exceptional cases are described below.The census targeted trees with diameter at breast height (dbh 1.3m) equal to or larger than 10-cm in the plot. Trees were identified, and their dbh (or girth at breast height), height were recorded.
