Abstract:
These are long-term observation of snowpack and snowfall depth at Uryu Experimental Forest, northern Japan from 1932 to 2012. The observation was conducted manually by technical staff of Uryu Experimental Forest, a core-site of Japan Long-Term Ecological Research Network. The snowpack depth from the ground and snowfall depth on the plate measured manually using the vertical scale at open space in front of headquarter office of Uryu Experimental Forest. Long-term decrease of the maximum snowpack depth and snowpack duration was reported in the following publication: Park JH, Duan L, Kim B, Mitchell MJ, Shibata H (2010) Potential Effects of Climate Change and Variability on Watershed Biogeochemical Processes and Water Quality in Northeast Asia. Environment International 36: 212-225. Sampling, Processing and Quality Control Methods

Step by Step Procedures
Step 1:
Description:

Snowpack depth

Snowpack depth from ground was measured manually using the vertical scale in morning at open space in front of headquarter office of Uryu Experimental Forest.

Instrument(s): Vertical scale
Step 2:
Description:

Snowdall depth

Snowfall depth was measured on the flat plate (ca. 30 x 30 cm) in morning at open space in front of headquarter office of Uryu Experimental Forest. The snowfall on the plate was removed after the every observation. Note that observed value means visible depth on the plate, doesn't mean water amount like precipitation.

Instrument(s): Mesurement plate; Vertical scale
Sampling Area And Frequency:
Observation was mostly conducted from October to May (depending on the duration of snowfall and snowpack) every winter.
Sampling Description:
Observation was conducted in every morning (except for Saturday, Sunday and National holidays) during winter. The ND indicates "Not Determined", but note that ND for snowfall depth during winter means no newly snowfall at the morning of the observation day.
