General Information:
Title:Database of Japanese semi-natural grassland flora
Identifier:ERDP-2023-01.1.3
Abstract:
The biodiversity of temperate grasslands can change considerably as a result of social and climate change. We have compiled information from published studies and created a database of Japanese semi-natural grassland flora, which contains databases of flora of each grassland, grassland locations, and management methods. This database is useful as a basis for the analysis of changes in the flora of Japanese grasslands as well as for future monitoring. The detailed Metadata for this abstract published in the Data Article section of the journal is available in MetaCat in JaLTER at http://db.cger.nies.go.jp/JaLTER/metacat/metacat/ERDP-2023-01.1/jalter-en.

Sampling, Processing and Quality Control Methods

Step by Step Procedures
Step 1:
Description:

Literature collection

Literature containing the data on flora (occurrence data on bryophytes and vascular plants) in Japanese grasslands was collected by JGCN until 2021. Although most of the grasslands included in the JGCN literature collection were semi-natural grasslands, the possibility that some of the grasslands are artificial ones seeded with grasses cannot be ruled out.

Step 2:
Description:

Data processing

1) Occurrence data on bryophytes and vascular plants were extracted from the literature and included in JG_FLORA.csv. The bibliographic data are listed in JG_LITERATURE.csv. 2) For those species whose Japanese name is recorded in the literature, their scientific name was included in the flora list (JG_FLORA.csv), according to the standard list of the names of Japanese vascular plants, Y-List (http://ylist.info/). For the species for which only the scientific name is recorded in the literature, the scientific name was included in the flora list. For all species included in the flora list, the taxonomically appropriate scientific name and Japanese name were added in JG_SPECIES.csv. During this process, information that seemed erroneous was corrected. 3) The name and location of each grassland in which a flora survey was conducted were listed in the grassland list (JG_GRASSLAND.csv). The name of the grassland was determined based on the original literature. In addition, if the information on the management type (mowing, burning, and grazing) in each grassland was available, it was also recorded. There were 180 grasslands for which this information was available. The location of each grassland was determined according to the description in the literature, and the latitude and longitude of the approximate center of the grassland were recorded (WGS84).
