Title: | Bee occurrence data collected in citizen science program “Hanamaru-Maruhana national census” in Japan |
Identifier: | ERDP-2021-04.1.2 |
Abstract: |
To understand bee distributions in Japan, we started citizen science program “Hanamaru-Maruhana national census (Bumble bee national census in English)” from 2013, and collected bee photographs taken by citizens. Bee photographs were collected via e-mail or “Mobile Phone System and Cloud Services” provided by Fujitsu FIP, Co. Species were identified from photographic images, and latitude-longitude data was extracted from GPS data in Exif information of photographs or address in text of e-mail. We have confirmed all 16 bumble bee species inhabiting in the Japanese archipelago excluding the Kurile Islands, and have got 5,503 records of these bumble bees. In addition, we have got 380 records of three carpenter bee species that are often mistaken for bumble bees by citizens. This occurrence data covers the time range from September 2006 to October 2018, the latitudinal range from 26.45 to 45.29, and the longitudinal range from 127.80 to 145.82. The latitude-longitude data was rounded off to two decimal places in the published dataset for protecting privacy rights of citizens. In addition, the latitude-longitude data of five rare bumble bee species/subspecies was rounded off to one decimal place for protecting their habitats.

Data Set Characteristics
Geographic Region: |
Geographic Description: | The dataset covers latitudinal range from 26.45 to 45.29, and longitudinal range from 127.80 to 145.82. The points of occurrence data are found from the northern island Hokkaido to the southern island Okinawa in the Japanese archipelago. The wide range of distribution data was collected, but the data has a large sampling bias because the most of photographs after 2015 were sent from four outstanding participants (please see “2.2.3. Principal investigators” for the definition of four outstanding participants, and “2.5. Temporal coverage” for the sampling bias). When our published data is used for scientific researches, spatial filtering and background manipulation (e.g., Phillips et al., 2009, Kramer-Schadt et al., 2013) are required to mitigate the sampling bias (Suzuki-Ohno et al., 2017, Ohno et al., 2018, Suzuki-Ohno et al., 2020). |

Methods
Using our web page (http://hanamaruproject.s1009.xrea.com/hanamaru_project/index_E.html), Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/hanamarumaruhana), and Twitters (https://twitter.com/Hanamaruchan870), we have asked citizens to take photographs of bumblebees in nature. Bee photographs were collected via e-mail or “Mobile Phone System and Cloud Services” provided by Fujitsu FIP, Co. Mobile Phone System and Cloud Services were photograph database tools developed by Fujitsu, and enabled us to display the locations of photographs on Google Maps (we call it “mapping service” in “2.5. Temporal coverage”), and download the occurrence data as a csv file. Mobile Phone System and Cloud Services recognized the date and locations of photographs from Exif information including GPS data recorded in photographs, respectively. When photographs did not have Exif information, we edited the information of the photographs by referring to the text in the e-mail and sent the edited photographs to Mobile Phone System and Cloud Services. We identified species from photographic images (please see 2.2.2. Dataset creator and 2.6.1. Accuracy of species identification).
