1. Objectives

Center for Global Environmental Research (CGER) monitors variations in vegetation and land cover in East Asia from the Russian Far East to Indonesia, and area covered by various types of vegetation ranging from boreal forests to tropical forests. Our purpose is to produce vegetation index maps and cloud-free images of 1 km resolution.

Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) mosaic images are compiled from data generated by the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) on board NOAA satellites (NOAA -12, -14, -15, -16), which are received by two receiving stations, located at Tsukuba, Ibaraki, and at Kuroshima Island*, Okinawa (Fig. 1)

* The monitoring project on the island was completed in 2001.
