Global Land Cover Maps (GLCM)


The land cover maps provided here are based on the reference ellipsoid of the World Geodetic System WGS84, covering the Earth in a 30 second latitude-longitude mesh network. They were constructed using a number of earlier global land cover maps and training data. By reducing the classification categories to only six, the accuracy of the maps has been improved. The following earlier maps have been used.

MOD12C4, MOD12C5 (Boston University), GLC2000 (Joint Research Center), Globcover (European Space Agency), UMD (The University of Maryland), GLCNMO (National Geographical Institute)

The training data used here were constructed from The Degree Confluence Project (DCP). For a description of DCP please refer to Iwao et al. (2006).

Below are the results of a verification test of the DCP data.
