This investigation studies the dynamic state of natural forest cut with the method of "Gunjou-Takubatu". "Gunjou-Takubatu" is the method of cutting the selected tree of some small area in a natural forest. "20-sen" area in the Teshio Experimental Forest has a natural forest. A part of the forest was cut with the method of "Gunjou-Takubatu" in 1992. The natural forest has been investigated to examine its stand structure and dynamics. A study plot named "20-sen Gunjou-Takubatu ti 2" with area 0.5-ha was introduced in 1992, followed by repeated tree censuses (at about 5year interval).

この研究の目的は、小面積に破壊された森林において、天然更新(てんねん こうしん)による森林再生メカニズムを解明し、破壊された森林の再生技術を確立する. 調査は北海道大学天塩研究林232林班で実施した. 当該地には天然林が成立しており、1992年度に素材生産(直営) (= 天塩研究林が、自前で木を伐り、丸太にする作業) による伐採がおこなわれた. つまり当該地は、群状択伐施業(ぐんじょう ばっさい せぎょう)により森林が一部、破壊されており、森林の再生課程を研究するのに適した場所である. そこで当該地における林分の変化を観察するため、1992年に形状100mx50m、面積0.5haの調査区を設け、5-10年間隔で、樹木の種類、本数、胸高周囲長などを計測している.

Targets to measure / 測定対象
The census targeted trees with diameter at breast height (1.3m) equal to or larger than 10-cm in the plot (1992 census). 1997 census, targeted trees with diameter at breast height (1.3m) equal to or larger than 6.8-cm in the plot. From 2002 census, targeted trees with diameter at breast height (1.3m) equal to or larger than 4-cm in the plot. Trees were identified by metal plate, and their species names were recorded.

"Jukan-kyu" or "Jukei-kyu" / 樹形級(じゅけいきゅう), 樹幹級(じゅかんきゅう)
A code indication of wood quality, with considering tree-form, is applied for individual trees in hardwood forests and mixed forests; 1: overstory trees with good wood quality. 2: understory trees, which are expectable to become a good dominant tree. 3a: Trees, which interrupt a better tree. 3b: Trees with unstraight stem, a sign of death, decay or weakening. "Jukan-kyu" is recorded from 1992 to 1997 census. "Jukei-kyu" is recorded from 2012 census.
